(lost) ad finem fidelis

Title: ad finem fidelis
Fandom: Lost
Characters: Penny (Penny/Desmond)
Spoilers: Up to "The Constant"
Prompt: [livejournal.com profile] lostsquee - “We are changed souls; we don’t look at things the same way anymore. For there was once a time when we expected the worst. But then the worst happened, did it not? And so we will never be surprised again.”
Word Count: 100 words
Summary: It should have ended happily ever after. She had found him; that should have been enough.

“I’ll find you.”

It should have ended happily ever after.

She had found him; that should have been enough.

But there are some wounds that time can only deepen, journeys that weaken rather than give strength.

He was no longer the man she had loved. His eyes were darker, filled with shadows of a past he would not speak of. His was a soul changed; but she would love the man he had become just the same.

“I'll come back to you, I promise.”

He had kept his word; he was back in her arms.

What was left of him.

Two Desmonds in one day? I feel spoiled by you. Can you have more slow days at work?

I just finished re-watching Atonement and this reminds me of the "Come back to me" moments that speak of hope and loss and regret. Great work!

Ha, I know! I don't know why I all of the sudden have Desmond on my mind, but I won't complain. Today is another slow one, but I am going to try and use it to finish the fic that I am totally stuck on.

It is funny that you should mention Atonement. I am actually reading the novel right now, so maybe that is where this came from.

Thanks!

That was beautiful. I love the idea of Desmond coming back to Penny different & not the man that she loved. Wonderful angst

Thank you! We know that Desmond is not the same man he used to be, but I hope it doesn't actually turn out this way. I am all for a happy ending for Penny and Des.

Oh wow, that was heartbreaking. And frighteningly real. After everything Desmond has been through, everything he's seen and done, I don't think there's any going back to who he was before. But he will come out stronger in the end, and he will finally know who he is, something he lacked before.

But he will come out stronger in the end, and he will finally know who he is, something he lacked before.

I hope you're right! I would still like to see him struggle with that a little more before he and Penny are reunited.

Thank you for reading!!

This is beyond amazing. Because it acknowledges something very painful and very true. What happen if, after so many years apart, they can't recognize each other, no matter how much they love each other. What if they only love a memory? Can you get over some things? This was great. I loved it to pieces.

Can you tell I am rather pessimistic? Almost all of my stories are gloomy. I am worried about all of those things that you mentioned. But I am hoping that the writers will choose this pairing for their chance to end on a high note. I don't expect there to be much for happy endings come the finale, but I think there will probably be one in store for Penny and Desmond. I hope... :(

That last line is such a killer. I feel so sorry for both of them, especially Penny.

I tend to think Penny is a much stronger person than Desmond. I believe that if something like this were to happen, she would be the one to hold it all together. You do not spend 3+ years searching for someone if you did not have a love for them that could survive anything. I hope the writers agree and at least give them a happy ending, even if the rest of the characters find only death and destruction.

Oh, I really like this, especially injecting that darkness and uncertainty into the Des/Pen 'true love' story. Wonderful!

I love your header - I think this is the 1st time I've seen it. It's gorgeous!

[identity profile] lovelornity.livejournal.com 2008-03-29 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I am hoping it does not turn out like this, but I guess there is a real possibility of Des not being the man she fell in love with. Even if that is the case, I still think they will get their "happily ever after."

Thank you! I absolutely love that picture of Sawyer. Josh Holloway is always able to convey so much emotion in just a look. I owe my complete love of Sawyer to him. If it was not for his complex portrayal of Sawyer, I would not have much to write about!

Ah. Tragic. Thats all I'm saying.

Well, I hope that is a good thing. :) Thanks for reading!

ohhh, that is really awesome! of course Des changed, after everything, and Penny changed too. but none the less, this is really bittersweet, although we can only hope love is enough to make it work!
